In the 1950s, the Department of Family and Community Medicine (FCM) started as the Department of Hygiene headed by Dr. Regino Padua. Through the years, the department evolved as the Department of Bacteriology and Preventive Medicine, Department of Microbiology, Hygiene and Laboratory Diagnosis.
The department was then divided into the Department of Microbiology and the Department of Preventive Medicine in 1955. Back then, it was also known as the Department of Social and Preventive Medicine.
Dr. Raquel So-Sayo and Dr. Annie Francisco, pioneers in Family Medicine education, started the Residency Program in 1987. Since then, over 25 family medicine doctors have completed their requirements and are now practicing in urban and rural communities. Some of the graduates are currently in academic teaching centers while the others are practicing abroad.
The FCM Residency Program provides the best education and training for Family Medicine residents and gives patients the best possible medical care by advocating the ideals of family medicine, advancing the knowledge base of primary care, and serving communities and families.
Residents are trained to succeed in urban and rural practice and become leaders in their respective communities.
FCM has full-time faculty physicians dedicated to resident education and patient care. In addition, the residents are educated by a complete spectrum of private practice physicians who are dedicated to resident education
The program emphasizes outpatient care, family care and continuity of care and is designed to develop critical clinical skills and decision-making abilities. Required subspecialty and elective rotations are available with a wide variety of physicians in all clinical disciplines.
At present, the department has two community-based outreach programs in Bagong Silang, Caloocan City and St. Peter and St. John Parish in Potrero, Malabon. FCM also mans the Industrial Health Clinic, a hospital-based outpatient service catering to industrial workers, HMO members and their dependents.
