- The Department of Neuro-Psychiatry, one of the youngest departments in the College, was formed in March 1988, marking the separation of its "roots" from the Department of Medicine. The Section of Rehabilitation Medicine was, incorporated to the department on the same year through a memorandum from the administration.
Dr. Rogelio B. Belleza was the first chairperson of the department. He held the post for 24 months. Under him Was Dr. Cheryl C. Albano, the Section Head of the Filemon D. Tanchoco Rehabilitation Center, a position she has held since 1987.
Initially, the faculty was composed of only two neurologists (Dr. Rogelio B. Belleza and Dr. Ceferino L. Rivera) and two psychiatrists (Dr. Merlina P. Abad and Dr. Jesus Abella). They were responsible for the training of the undergraduate and postgraduate students.
In January 1990 DL Ceferino L. Rivera became the next chairperson of the department, a position he held for 4 years. In 1991 two additional neurologists and one neurosurgeon were appointed as members of the faculty of the department. They were Dr. Rolando C. Perez, who was also appointed as the Training Officer, Dr. Ma. Linda M. Manalo, and Dr. Alfredo L. Tan, a neurosurgeon who lectured on the neurosurgical aspects of CVA, head injuries and brain tumors .
Initially the department had its office at the EEG Room where grand rounds and lectures were also held. The department was finally given its own office in 1991.This was located at the ground floor of the anatomy building beside the Doctors' Offices. In 1996 the office moved to its present location.
Dr. Rogelio Belleza now heads the department, having been reappointed to the chairmanship of the department a second time on June 1, 1994 . The training officer is Dr. Ma. Linda Manalo and the college coordinator is Dr. Ma. Imelda B. Batar.
The current thrust of the department is to teach the students the innovative and challenging PBL strategy and to train medical residents in the field of neurology.
