-When it was first founded, the acting head of the Department of Pathology was Dr. Melquiades Francisco. Dr. Almario Boccal occupied the position after him and in the late 1960s Dr. Jose Faraon was appointed the head of the department. In the early seventies Dr. Roche Ramos took over as chairperson until she later migrated to the United States. After her, in 1975 Dr. Buenaventura Erese was designated officer in charge.
Today the department is chaired by Dr. Antonia G. Cruz-Basa, a diplomate in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology, American Board of Pathology and Philippine Board of Pathology. She was appointed to the position in 1975 and she is concurrently the head of the Department of Laboratories, MCU-FDTMF Hospital.
Dr. Antonia G. Cruz – Basa was instrumental in the formation and was first to head the Committee of Blood Transfusion, Tissue Committee and the Tumor Board. She served as member of various committees in the hospital including the Records Committee, Infection Committee and the Credentials Committee. She has been the Chairman of the Promotional Board of the Second Year since its inception on 1986 to the present. She was the first President of the Faculty Association, Medicine Chapter of MCU and the served as treasurer of the mother organization. She had organized and chaired various activities and projects of both the College of Medicine and Hospital, notably the Foundation Anniversary Celebration on July 1989.
In 1982 for the first time, the Department of Pathology was accredited for residency training in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology by the Philippine Society of Pathologists. It’s training program has now produced a number of accredited pathologists who successfully passed the requirements of the PSP. Its training Program has now produced a number of certified specialists in pathology, notably Dr. Ma. Luisa C. Policarpio who topped the Board of Pathology both in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology, and Dr. Monina Yu who is board certified for Anatomic Pathology. Both are faculty members of the Pathology Department. Dr. Wiston Magno who started his training in pathology in the department is now a Diplomate of the American Board of Pathology in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology and presently a staff pathologist of St. Joseph Hospital in Connecticut, USA.
